Feral cat Honey goes from running away at first sight to ruling her new home in a heartwarming two-year transformation

Honey went from running at the sight of a hooman to running the house.

Reddit user Expert-Nose1893 recently shared Honey's transformation on Reddit's r/catdistributionsystem subreddit, and it all started with a nervous visitor on the porch. Two years ago, Honey wanted absolutely nothing to do with people. The moment she realized a human was nearby, she bolted. She kept coming back, though, and each visit brought her a little closer.

Her future pawrent had plenty of food and even more patience, letting Honey decide when she was ready to trust. Eventually, pets were allowed. Even then, Honey kept her feelings close to her fluffy chest. It took an entire month of petting before she finally let out her little raspy purr. For a formerly feral feline, that was a pretty big vote of confidence.

After Honey was TNR'd, she was released outside, but apparently she had already chosen her territory. She barely left the porch. Naturally, the accommodations started improving. A bed appeared, followed by a heated house, toys, and basically anything else Honey could request. She may have technically been an outdoor cat, but she already had staff.

Then winter arrived. Seeing Honey curled into a ball in her heated house was enough to earn her invitations indoors. One night became another until Honey eventually came inside and simply never left.

We'd say she negotiated that transition beautifully.

These days, Honey is making up for lost time by living like absolute feline royalty. It's a pretty impressive career change for a former feral cat who once wouldn't even stick around for pets.

From scared porch visitor to spoiled house cat, Honey took her time getting there, but she definitely picked the right person to trust.

  • That little blep speaks volumes about just how safe and comfortable Honey feels now. This is a cat who once took off the second she realized a hooman was nearby, and now she’s lounging around with her tongue sticking out without a care in the world. You don’t get much more relaxed than that. It may only be a tiny blep, but it feels like a pretty big sign that Honey knows she’s home, she’s loved, and she can finally let her guard down.

  • The other cat took one look at Honey and said, “Awesome, they got me a new friend.” No questions about where she came from or how long she planned on staying, just immediate excitement about having another feline in the house. We’d like to think Honey appreciated having a welcoming committee waiting for her too. Going from life outside to a brand-new home is a big adjustment, but having a fellow cat around to show her the ropes probably made things feel a little more familiar.

    Mental_Chemical356 I've learned that feral is simply a measure of fear, and lack of trust, which means that some cats can be "rehabilitated" with the right people. There are cats that will never come around, due to extreme fear, but I think so many can be won over. It's worth trying.

  • Honey’s glow-up deserves a round of applause. From cautiously hanging around the porch to stretching out inside like she’s owned the place her entire life, this girl has come a long way. Just look at that confidence! She’s comfortable, she’s spoiled, and she has fully embraced the house cat lifestyle. Two years ago, getting close enough for a pet was a big deal. Now Honey is living like the queen she was clearly always meant to be.
